In the Kidizens “Young Senators” program, students govern a state comprised of the cities from our regular Kidizens program. The Young Senators serve as the representatives of a state government, working with their constituencies to enact laws and bills. The Young Senators also build their own LEGO city, which serves as the state capital and feature a capitol building and government structures as well as museums, highways and perhaps a mall or esplanade. They work with each city’s representatives in formulating tax rates, fighting crime and dealing with environmental issues and major business plans. The committees of Senators also act as political advisors and come up with challenging and interesting situations to which the Mayors and representatives from different cities respond to.
We have incorporated a few new things and fun elements from our Leadership program with the hope to create a perfect social, yet a coopetive, learning environment for our senators to get challenged, thrive and have fun! The senators will be ranked on each of the issue they choose to represent for the state – management of finances, economy, environment, education, healthcare, infrastructure, etc. This program is targeted at kids from 9-11, those who have done previous sessions of our regular Kidizens or those who are at 5th grade or young middle-school equivalent grade levels.
Our cities (capital and regular) that the children started building in Fall, will continue to exist during our Winter/Spring semester. As always the Senators will be serving dual functions as both residents and local legislators for their capital city overseeing the governance of the state, as well as representative Senators to the larger Kidizens state at large. As their constituent cities grow, the Senators will more actively work with those that they represent to implement state taxes, infrastructure, laws and managing the state’s budget, debt and economy. As always, teamwork, compromise and communication will be skills that will develop further and serve the senators in good stead.
Our capital city will continue to grow as the Senators begin to analyze businesses as a thrust to boost the economy in the capital city (and the state). We will be studying a wide range of advanced economics concepts as the Senators put on their entrepreneurial hats, create new businesses and analyze constituent city businesses.
In addition, the election season will kick off and the newly elected Governor will take his or her place as head of the state’s executive branch. There will also be elections for other cabinet positions and the head of the Judiciary Branch who will rule on the constitutionality of controversial laws.
The year would end in a World’s Fair in which the Senators (and their constituents) will focus on both cultural heritage and the future. In this celebration of the Kidizens State, the Senators will organize tributes to the accomplishments of the year as well as looking to the future — imagining and presenting what a Kidizens city might look like in the year 2100.
The Spring session is going to be a whole lot of work, a whole lot of learning and, of course, a whole lot of fun!
